Bringing transportation professionals together
About the Society of Transportation Professionals
The Society of Transportation Professionals (STP) was launched to help transportation professionals employed in the federal government come together to improve their workplaces. The STP was formed by the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) union to help Department of Transportation (DOT) professionals that do not have a union in their workplaces, but want to start the process of having a say. PASS members ensure our nation’s safety in the air and know first hand that having a union is an invaluable asset when it comes to transportation safety. DOT employees that have a union have a seat at the table when determining work schedules, safety procedures, and other work policies. DOT professionals that join together with their colleagues are making federal agencies better places to work.
Professional Aviation Safety Specialists
The Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) is made up of more than 11,000 professional employees at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Defense (DoD). PASS members are responsible for maintaining air traffic control and national defense equipment, overseeing the commercial and general aviation industries, developing flight procedures, and performing quality analyses of complex aviation systems. Through their union, PASS members advocate for strong safety standards and the resources to ensure they are appropriately implemented.
FAQs
What is a union?
A group of employees who come together to negotiate with their employer over their terms and working conditions. The employees are the union—they democratically elect leaders to oversee their union’s affairs and conduct negotiations with their employer. Joining together in union is the only legally-protected way employees can have a voice in workplace decisions.
Why do federal transportation professionals need a union?
Over six million professional and technical employees across the United States have joined together with their colleagues to gain a written contract that guarantees input in the decisions that affect them at work. Through their union, federal transportation professionals at the FAA have a voice as well as a system of support and solidarity. They have a network of colleagues who understand the needs of the workforce and have the same level commitment to building and maintaining the country’s infrastructure. Union members are also able to invest in their futures with access to trainings and other professional development opportunities. Additionally, PASS members at the FAA have the chance to serve as a union liaison or subject matter expert on a variety of agency projects, bringing the voice of employees to the table. Non-union DOT professionals don’t have any of these benefits or workplace rights. It’s time they join together in union and gain a greater say in their federal sector workplaces.
What is collective bargaining?
Collective bargaining is the formal process employees in unions and their employers use to negotiate the terms and conditions of work. Similar to CEOs’ contracts, union members’ terms and conditions of work agreed upon during collective bargaining are solidified in a contract called the collective bargaining agreement.
